Summary of Duties:
Provide campus strategy and leadership for full accessibility accommodations for students with disabilities in classrooms, testing spaces, labs, and clinical environments pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973). Serve as a liaison between WSU Spokane Health Sciences colleges (Medicine, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nursing) and other programs. Review supporting medical and behavioral health documentation and conduct intake interviews with students to identify and assign reasonable accommodations. Ensure that technical standards of the colleges are met.

Develop and implement staff and faculty training on processes and policies.

The position directs the work of a technical services specialist, testing services and alternate print technology, and supervises part-time testing proctors. This position works with disability resources personnel university-wide on policy development, implementation, and interpretation and consults as necessary on individual student accommodations.

This position should be comfortable carrying out the Student Affairs values of collaboration, inclusion, innovation, empowerment, communication and compassion.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Determine Eligibility & Assign Reasonable and Appropriate Accommodations: 40%

  • Process and review applications from students requesting accommodations. Determine student eligibility for disability services by reviewing appropriate medical and behavioral health documentation.
  • Determine appropriate services and didactic, lab and clinical accommodations by reviewing disability documentation and conducting interviews with students to determine the functional limitations that the disability imposes and assign appropriate and reasonable accommodations to ensure that the Technical Standards of the colleges are met.
  • Conduct intakes with students to determine the functional limitations that the disability imposes and assign appropriate and reasonable accommodations to ensure that the Technical Standards of the colleges are met.
  • Lead the implementation of identified accommodations for students in collaboration with faculty, research labs, and clinical site staff. Ensure that confidentiality of protected health information is maintained.



Training and Outreach: 20%

  • Develop and implement training for faculty and staff regarding Access Services policies and processes including use of the MyAccess system and Faculty Portal.
  • Create and present ADA trainings and workshops to faculty, academic advisors and staff to further develop best practices to support students.
  • Assist in increasing understanding and awareness of the needs of students with disabilities by presenting or facilitating workshops/seminars for faculty, administration, staff, and tutors.



Administrative: 20%

  • Regularly review disability support services policies and procedures to incorporate current practices and regulations.
  • Responsible to evaluate and monitor disability compliance for WSU Spokane and WSU Yakima students to ensure compliance with ADA/ADAAA/Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and applicable Special Education laws and regulations as it relates to individuals with disabilities.
  • Responsible for ensuring that Disability Services complies with federal, state and university laws and policies.
  • Provide innovative and strategic leadership to oversee compliance with applicable legal requirements.
  • Maintain and track case files including, inputting notes, and documentation at various stages of the interactive process using the case management system (AIM). Abide by University regulations for establishing and maintaining confidential records.



Resource: 15%

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff across the WSU Spokane colleges and WSU-system.
  • Provide information and clarification regarding University Disability policies/procedures to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist students in resolution of personal and academic problems and crises by exhibiting excellent problem-solving, crisis-management, and listening skills to understand the student's situation and assess how best to assist the student and providing guidance and support to help the student best address their disability related needs.
  • Assist students with managing grievances related to disability accommodations. Work with faculty, staff, administrators, and relevant offices to resolve grievance



Other: 5%

  • Maintain current knowledge in disability support services (DSS) regulations, laws, and industry practices and advancements, and participate in relevant professional training opportunities as budget permits.
  • Other duties as assigned.




Required Qualifications:


Positions require a Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. Experience leading or directing the work of others. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.



Additional Requirements:

  • Two years of full-time professional experience in higher education disability services.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws related to providing disability accommodations in higher education and in compliance with ADA and Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973.




Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychological Counseling, Education or related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and familiarity with student information systems.
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong knowledge of cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities, attention disabilities, and
  • psychological disabilities.
  • Disability services experience in health sciences programs, including clinical and lab settings.
  • Understanding and experience with assistive and accessible information technologies, including
  • best practices such as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) preferred.
