Minimum Qualifications:

Applicant needs to only meet the minimum qualifications for either archaeology OR architectural history

Archaeology:

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeology
  • Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field
  • At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration, or management
  • At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology
  • One year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of prehistoric or historic archeological resources

 

Architectural History:

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History
  • Master’s degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation or closely related field OR
  • Bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation or closely related field AND one of the following: at least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history

Preferences:

Archaeology:

  • Knowledge of archaeological and historical survey methodology; Knowledge of Florida’s archaeological and historical resources; knowledge of and experience with cultural resource survey report standards and regulations, including 1A-46, Florida Administrative Code, or equivalent standards from another state; experience applying National Register of Historic Places criteria to evaluate archaeological site significance; experience with Geographic Information Systems and ArcView software or similar programs; experience with the Florida Department of Transportation project planning process or similar process; experience applying archaeological expertise to analyze potential effects to archaeological resources resulting from transportation or other infrastructure projects and identifying appropriate measures to address any potential effects.

Architectural History:

  • A master’s degree in in architectural history, art history, historic preservation or closely related field; a minimum of two (2) years of experience in cultural resource management or architectural history experience related to the federal process under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act; knowledge of and experience with cultural resource survey report standards and regulations, including 1A-46, Florida Administrative Code, or equivalent standards from another state; knowledge of Florida’s historic resources and Florida’s architectural history; experience applying National Register of Historic Places criteria to evaluate the built environment eligibility for listing in the National Register; experience with Geographic Information Systems and ArcView software or similar programs; experience with the Florida Department of Transportation project planning process or similar process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

These positions are responsible for reviewing federal and state transportation projects and associated undertakings for potential effects to historic properties in accordance with state and federal law. In particular, these positions provide subject matter expertise to evaluate the potential effects to either archaeological or architectural resources resulting from transportation projects.

 

These positions are funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to provide the Florida Division of Historical Resources (DHR) with sufficient staff to review and comment on transportation projects on an expedited basis.

 

The OPS Historic Preservationist:

  • Completes transportation project reviews and prepare appropriate correspondence at each phase of DHR's involvement in FDOT projects
  • Reviews and comments regarding the completeness and sufficiency of cultural resource assessment surveys and related technical documents
  • Participates in consultation with FDOT, federal and state agencies, and Compliance staff regarding review of transportation projects
  • Consults with FDOT to identify significant archaeological sites, historic structures, and other cultural resources in project areas and assess effects to these resources in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local preservation laws and implementing regulations.
  • Prepares appropriate official review correspondence with government agencies, consultants, and other entities as necessary.
  • Prepares quarterly invoice data and reports for FDOT and DHR.
  • Provides Compliance supervisor and DHR leadership with opinions and recommendations regarding transportation projects
  • Maintains project files in an orderly manner and consistently meets project review deadlines.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong computer literacy focused on the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), Adobe, and database software
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines, work independently, manage multiple projects, and strong organizational skills
