Role Overview

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. The legal intern supports attorneys in the Legal Division by assembling and organizing information for legal documents, researching law, assembling case materials, and writing reports and memoranda.


Salary Statement

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts. 

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Researches legal issues by studying statutes, regulations, federal guidance materials, and court opinions. 
  • Prepares legal memoranda.
  • Prepares legal drafts by assembling and organizing information for legal forms and documents, including discovery requests, responses, and other pleadings.
  • Assembles case materials by collecting, organizing, and summarizing information, documents, reports, and evidence.
  • Maintains own calendar by entering and updating requirements, hearing dates, and meetings.
  • Keeps all client information, attorney work product, and personal information of individuals and organizations confidential pursuant to applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Participates in various Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship Program activities.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Current enrollment in an ABA-approved law school (or a law degree conferred by an ABA-approved law school) and the completion of at least one semester of law school coursework. 
  • Experience with legal research.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • The ability to work well under pressure and to effectively prioritize multiple concurrent assignments. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite: Outlook Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to exercise discretion appropriately, providing tactful and diplomatic customer service.
