The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan invite applications for a Lecturer I position at 33.33% effort for the Fall Term 2024. This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 26, 2024 and end on December 31, 2024. One part-time position is available.
Duties of these Lecturer I positions are expected to include teaching, developing course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester.
The successful candidate will design and teach AMCULT 215/AMAS 215/MIDEAST 275: Introduction to Arab-American Studies, a 4-credit undergraduate course with support from 2 graduate student instructors. In this course, students will be introduced to the field of Arab-American Studies, specifically through examination of how Arab Americans engage with questions of structures of power, ethnicity, and race. It provides a historical overview of Arab Americans and race in relation to a series of other identity markers, such as class, gender, sexuality, religion, and nation. This course fits particularly within the Program in American Culture?s focus on transnational and diasporic considerations of race, and serves as the core course for the Arab-Muslim American Studies program and ethnic studies minor.
The successful candidate must be available to teach Tuesdays/Thursdays 1:00-2:30PM.
The candidate must hold a terminal or graduate degree in American Studies, Islamic Studies, Middle East Studies, literature, history, anthropology, sociology, media studies, or other related fields. Prior teaching experience at the college/university level is preferred.
The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant?s education and experience meet the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.
Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in American Studies, Arab American Studies, and/or Muslim American Studies.
