The Department of Elections (Department) conducts all federal, state and local elections in the City and County of San Francisco, currently serving approximately 510,000 registered voters. Position Description:

In preparation for the November 5, 2024 Consolidated General Election, the Department is seeking versatile and dependable drivers to assist with transporting standby poll workers and supplies to various polling places, delivering supplies to Polling Place Inspectors and, ensuring timely delivery of ballots to voters in San Francisco.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to skillfully drive a sedan and/or van, adhere to directions, and maintain focus and accuracy in their work, all while demonstrating a strong commitment to safety. This role requires the continuous use of hands and arms, as well as the ability to sit for prolonged periods during safe vehicle operation.

The candidate must be able to work independently and be able to use a smart phone for navigation and communication purposes.

While the primary assignment is on Election Day, November 5, 2024, there may be potential for additional assignments between November 1, 2024 and November 17, 2024, subject to the Department’s operational needs. Any additional dates will be confirmed and communicated in advance.

A mandatory paid 4-hour training is scheduled for October 29, 2024. The workday on November 5, 2024 will start at 4:30 AM at City Hall, where candidates will receive specific instructions and supplies. The day's duties will start with dispatching poll workers, followed by ballot delivery tasks, potentially beginning as early as 8:30 AM.

Position Schedule, Requirements, and Hours:

This is a short-term assignment that includes the completion of mandatory training session tentatively scheduled on October 29, 2024, and performing dispatch and delivery driver duties on Election Day. Specifically, the schedule involves:

  1. Trainings: A mandatory in-person training session, approximately 4 hours in duration, is tentatively scheduled for October 29, 2024. This session will cover vehicle department policy, dispatch driver duties, Emergency Ballot Delivery protocols, and route training.
  2. Potential Pre-Election Tasks: Driving and election-related assignments on October 29, 2024 - November 4, 2024
  3. Election Day Tasks: The primary assignment is on November 5, 2024. It is an approximately 20-hour commitment, starting at 4:30 AM and continuing until the end of Election Day activities. Overtime, for hours worked beyond the standard 8-hour day, will be compensated at 1.5 times the hourly rate.
  4. Potential Post-Election Tasks: Ballot processing assignments on November 6, 2024 - November 27, 2024

Work hours will vary widely in accordance with the demands of the election cycle and will range between 20 and 60 hours per week. The person in this position must be available to work overtime both during the week and on weekends as necessary. Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 the hourly rate.

This is a temporary exempt as-needed position. Temporary exempt as-needed employees who have worked more than 1040 hours in any consecutive 12-month period, and whose normal work week at the time of inclusion in the system is not less than 20 hours are eligible for health coverage and retirement benefits. Position Salary: $27.575 to $33.5 hourly

Experience :
Six (6) months of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.

Substitution:

Any one of the following may substitute for the required experience:

Completion of 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university; OR

Completion of a clerical training program (240 hours); OR

Completion of an approved City and County of San Francisco Clerical Administrative training program.

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
