Job Description

  • The Decentralized Float Nurse in the department of surgical specialties is accountable for the delivery of culturally sensitive, age specific direct nursing care for adult and pediatric Surgical Specialty patients in multiple ACU?s under Surgical Specialties. The Registered Nurse demonstrates adaptability to changing needs and priorities based on unit, department, and institutional goals/objectives. The Registered Nurse shows a willingness to adapt to different populations as adult and pediatric surgical specialty care demands. Orientation and training provided for new subspecialties on expansion of division.

  • Perform phone triage, in-basket management, including assessment, screening, clinical advice, nurse visits (in person/ video visit) in-clinic hands on procedures, and other duties as assigned.  
  • Provide direct patient care -wound management, pre and post operative care and education, common clinic procedures and tests in fast paced, sub-specialty surgical environment.
  • Administer sedation/analgesia under the direction of a physician in Oral Surgery clinics. Assess and document hemodynamic status during sedation and post procedure. Initiate peripheral intravenous lines.
  • Provide nursing care to adult and pediatric specialty populations in various departments of surgical specialties to include, but not limited to: Catheter changes, SP tube changes, bladder instillations, ISC teaching, urodynamic testing, temporal artery biopsies, blepharoplasty, Botox injections, wide local incision, PDL procedures.
  • Accurate and efficient documentation of nursing care. 
  • Knowledge and appropriate use of internal and external resources. 
  • Provide functional supervision to assistive personnel; collaborate with colleagues, other disciplines, and health care/community services to promote continuity of care.

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan Medicine
  • Two (2) or more years of recent (in last 5 years) performing direct patient care with adult surgical patients.
  • Two (2) or more years of recent (in last 5 years) of ICU, ED, or Sedation Analgesia Professional experience.
  • ACLS Certification required.
  • Experience with providing direct patient care within the last 5 years to at least one of the three following patient populations: Otolaryngology, Urology, or Oral Surgery.

  • Demonstrated experience with peripheral IV insertion.
  • Previous experience as a float nurse.
  • Ambulatory phone triage experience.
  • Two (2) or more years of recent (in last 5 years) experience with electronic medical records, specifically EPIC.  Computer/typing skills such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position.

Hours: 40 hrs/wk, 8 and 10 hour shifts. Monday through Friday. Potential Weekends and Holidays.
Shift: Days, Variable shifts. Flexibility in scheduling is required. 
Location: This is a float position. Location varies based on assignment.
