POSITION OVERVIEW

Tilcon Connecticut is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented student to join our Commercial Sales Team as a Sales Intern. This internship offers the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in business-to-business sales, customer relations, estimating, and commercial operations within the construction materials industry. Based in our Newington, CT office, interns will work alongside experienced sales professionals while applying classroom learning in a fast-paced, real-world business environment.   

This role is ideal for students pursuing degrees in Business, Finance, Economics, Marketing, Communications, or Liberal Arts who are eager to explore careers in sales, account management, or customer solutions. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Sales/Marketing   

  • Support the sales team in promoting Tilcon products and services, particularly asphalt and aggregates.   
  • Assist in preparing customer quotes, sales reports, and marketing materials.   
  • Shadow and participate in customer visits to develop strong business relationship-building skills.   
  • Research and analyze market trends, competitor activities, and customer needs to support business development initiatives.   
  • Follow up on sales leads and quotes in coordination with the commercial team.   

Customer Solutions   

  • Act as a supporting point of contact for customer inquiries, researching and collaborating with internal teams to provide information and solutions.   
  • Assist in validating billing ticket data and maintaining exemption certificates to ensure accuracy and compliance.   
  • Document and track customer interactions to support effective follow-up and satisfaction.   
  • Learn root cause analysis techniques by assisting with investigations of recurring issues and identifying improvement opportunities.   

Estimating/Administrative   

  • Support review of job specifications, bid documents, and estimates to understand the sales process for construction materials.   
  • Assist with preparation of estimate sheets, contracts, subcontracts, and job worksheets.   
  • Contribute to backlog and forecasting updates in coordination with the sales team.   
  • Participate in cross-department collaboration with operations, finance, and dispatch to understand the end-to-end sales cycle.   

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education/Experience  

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Marketing, Communications, or Liberal Arts.   
  • Prior experience in customer service, sales, or administrative work is a plus but not required.   
  • Familiarity with construction, aggregates, or asphalt products a plus but not required.   

Knowledge/Skill Requirements   

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.   
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a focus on collaboration and active listening.   
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while prioritizing effectively in a fast-paced environment.   
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams); experience with Salesforce or CRM tools preferred.   
  • Reliable, motivated, and eager to develop skills in sales and customer engagement.   
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational skills.   

Additional Information   

  • Interns must be available to work on-site in Newington, CT.   
  • Occasional field visits to project or production sites may be required. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.   
  • This internship provides exposure to a wide range of commercial sales functions and can serve as a potential pathway to a full-time career within Tilcon or its parent company, CRH.
