Job Description

The Test Engineer assists in testing components and systems for use in mining equipment.

Responsibilities
Test Engineer 1:
  • Works with Engineers and Technicians performing tests on mining products, equipment, or systems.
  • Participates in Engineering Development Program.
  • Follows established test procedures to perform engineering tests.
  • Work independently or as a team member with other engineers, technicians, and field personnel on projects.
  • Writes technical reports of analytical test results and observations.
  • Sets up data acquisition equipment and sensors in preparation for testing activities.

Test Engineer 2:
  • All duties of Test Engineer 1, plus:
  • Sets up and performs tests on products, equipment, or systems according to test procedures.
  • Reads and follows test procedures to perform testing activities.
  • Works with other Engineers to research and analyze the best method to test a specific component or truck sub-system.
  • Installs and operates data acquisition equipment and sensors required for a particular test.
  • Reads and interprets maintenance and operators manuals, technical drawings, basic electrical or hydraulic schematics, engineering specifications, and reports.
  • Writes a technical report at the completion of a test and provides feedback to the requesting Engineer on the results.
  • Uses PC based data analysis software to verify data integrity at the time of testing.
  • Works independently or as a team member with other engineers, technicians, and field service personnel to complete a testing project.

Test Engineer 3:
  • All duties of Test Engineer 2, plus:
  • Researches, plans, sets-up, and supervises or performs tests on products, equipment, or systems according to test procedures or best practices.
  • Assists with writing test procedures to perform engineering tests on new and existing products or systems.
  • Analyzes test data and writes technical reports of test results. Uses the data, observations, and engineering experience to draw conclusions from the results and compare to the engineering.
  • specification if available. Determines root cause of failure or makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Directs the work of Technicians for the duration of a particular test.
  • Interprets national and international standards (ISO, SAE, etc.) documents and designs tests to meet all requirements.
  • Proposes, researches, designs, and analyzes new in-house test equipment.
  • Researches and makes recommendations for the test equipment or sensor type required to perform a certain test.
  • Leads the testing activities required for R&D research projects into new truck technologies.
  • Leads Test Engineers or Technicians in the installation and operation of data acquisition equipment and sensors required for a particular test.
  • Works with major component suppliers (engine, drive system, etc.) or customers on joint test projects.
  • Acts as the point of contact for the Test Group.

Test Engineer 4 (Senior):
  • All duties of Test Engineer 3, plus:
  • Trains, mentors, and develops Engineers and other personnel on procedures, advanced data analysis concepts, and best practices related to testing.
  • Researches and writes test procedures to perform engineering tests on new and existing products or systems that comply with accepted industry standards.
  • Acts as the technical expert for the engineering department in specialized areas of complex system troubleshooting and test measurement technology.
  • Leads Truck or System Verification and Validation planning through execution to include system certification.
  • Works with Engineering, Sales and Product Management to review customer requirements to ensure products meet national or international standards.
  • Plans and executes multiple projects in parallel including resource allocation and logistics.


Competencies
Education and Experience:
  • Test Engineer 1: A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) or, Associate of Science Degree (ASEE) with 10 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
  • Test Engineer 2: A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) with 1 year of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) with 2 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
  • Test Engineer 3: A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) with 4 to 6 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) with 6 to 8 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.
  • Test Engineer 4 (Senior): A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) with 6 to 8 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment or, a Bachelor of Science Degree (BSME/MET) with 8 to 10 years of relevant mechanical experience in an engineering environment.

Test Engineer 1:
  • Working knowledge of 3D drafting tools, CAD or numerical analysis tools and software.
  • Knowledge of drafting tools or Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or drafting equipment and software.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical and computer concepts.
  • Knowledge of the application and use of basic sensor and data acquisition concepts and best practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and engineering test procedures.
  • Skilled in work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, calculus, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply basic engineering concepts to practical situations.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Test Engineer 2:
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Test Engineer 1, plus:
  • Skilled in common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Skilled in the application and use of basic sensor and data acquisition concepts and best practices.
  • Skilled in the installation and configuration of truck software.
  • Ability to adapt to diverse testing situations and challenges at customer’s site, supplier’s site, or in-house test lab.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot system logic.
  • Knowledge of the interpretation of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Durability concepts.
  • Knowledge of advanced data acquisition concepts and analysis techniques required for tests such as noise, vibration, and metal fatigue.
  • Knowledge of technical fundamentals of mining truck operation and control.
  • Knowledge of basic low voltage controls and electrical circuits.
  • Knowledge of basic mobile equipment hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of using basic data displays such as time history plots and histograms.
  • Utilizes business ERP systems to check parts availability or search for Bill of Materials (BOMs) and engineering drawings.

Test Engineer 3:
  • Demonstrated proficiency of Test Engineer 2, plus:
  • Skilled the interpretation of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Durability concepts.
  • Skilled in technical fundamentals of mining truck operation and control.
  • Skilled in basic mobile equipment hydraulics.
  • Skilled in basic low voltage controls and electrical circuits.
  • Skilled in using basic data displays such as time history plots and histograms.
  • Skilled in using basic electrical and computer concepts to perform testing activities.

  • Skilled in the application of test planning and managing projects.
  • Skilled in AC drive system controls and its application on mining trucks.
  • Skilled in applying advanced mobile equipment hydraulic concepts to testing programs.
  • Skilled in the application and use of advanced sensor and data acquisition concepts and best practices.
  • Skilled in using the latest electrical and computer concepts to perform testing activities.
  • Skilled in applying advanced engineering concepts to practical situations.
  • Ability to engage in advanced engineering discussions and correspondence.
  • Experienced, skillful negotiator able to find consensus within a group with diverse opinions.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability and willingness to make decisions of consequence.
  • Skilled in planning, managing, and directing resources and managing projects including the use of project management software .

Additional Requirements:
  • Is expected to travel nationally and internationally up to 30% to customer or supplier sites.
  • Ability to complete and maintain mine certifications or safety training such as Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) hazard training.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
