Trauma Surgeon

The Department of Trauma and Burn at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County seeks a skilled trauma surgeon at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level. Expertise is required in the areas of penetrating trauma and surgical critical care. Applicants must have an MD, DO, or equivalent degree and be certified by the American Board of Surgery in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Candidates should also be ATLS certified.

Clinical responsibilities include patient care in complex penetrating trauma and surgical critical care. There are no emergency general surgery duties. The Cook County Trauma Unit as a trauma team has one of the nation’s first Trauma Fellowships with 3 fellows and a complement of surgery and emergency medicine residents and physician assistants. Clinical areas of supervisory responsibility include the Trauma ICU, Trauma Ward Unit, and Trauma Resuscitation Unit. Cook County Trauma Unit admissions are triaged separately through a trauma emergency department. As a consequence, emergency medicine residents are an essential component of our trauma team.

Educational responsibilities include supervision and instruction of medical students, residents, and fellows. The Cook County Trauma Unit is a preferred destination for physician assistants, medical students, residents, and fellows both nationally and internationally. The Trauma Center hosts learners from multiple medical institutions providing for a very dynamic educational environment.

Successful candidates will be competent in the management of complex penetrating trauma and ICU care. They will enjoy educating a diversity of learners and engaging in one of the very successful divisions of the Department of Trauma which include:

Division of Trauma Surgery
Division of Burn Surgery
Division of Prehospital Resuscitation and Tactical Medicine
Division of Joint Combat Trauma Training (House Naval MCP)
Division of Trauma Recovery and Injury Prevention (TRIP)
Division of Global Trauma Training
